The national government, through the Ministry of Education (MoE), has been urged to fast- track funding for adult education centres across the country so as to increase levels of literacy.
Speaking to Education News in his office at the Bungoma Adult Secondary Education Centre hosted at Mupeli DEB Primary School, the principal Mr Antony Makio noted that the institution has enrolled the oldest pupil at 49 years amongst 115 learners.
According to Mr Makio, the enrollment went down from the initial over 200 after the MoE cut funding to public adult learning centres.
The principal revealed that the school has only five teachers employed by the government, posing a serious challenge to teaching and learning. They are all, however, qualified as they are certificate, diploma and degree holders.
The school, which sat its first Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) exams in 2011, has so far transitioned a total of 10 adult learners, with 70 per cent joining middle level colleges and TVET institutions, and a few qualifying for university.
