Uasin Gishu Director of Education Harisson Muriuki has warned school heads against sending students home for fees, especially in January when the inaugural Junior Secondary School (JSS) will be reporting.
Speaking after opening Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) classrooms at Wareng’ Secondary School, Muriuki said they should instead sit down and discuss with parents how they will pay.
“We have asked schools to call parents and have discussions and agree on when and how they will pay the fees. Those parents who don’t have money can bring goats, firewood, or anything equivalent to the fees,” he said.
The director said parents whose children are in private schools will be expected to pay the fees demanded by those schools.
He said the county is ready for the enrolment of JSS in January.
The county has over 150 private schools which have ready laboratories, being the minimum requirement for the establishment of a junior secondary section.
Private schools that have constructed laboratories and are ready for CBC include Potters Academy, Testimony, and Valley Baptist, among others.
