Shelve co-curricular activities to recover lost time, school heads tell Ministry

By Fredrick Odiero

Secondary school heads from Kisumu County now want the Ministry of Education to shelve co curriculum activities in learning institutions in order to recover lost time.

Led by the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KSSHA) Kisumu chapter chairperson Mr Opiyo Nyangwe, the heads noted that schools are racing against time to complete their syllabi by the end of the calendar year.

The heads at the same time urged parents to be flexible in demands they make to the government responding to suggestions made by some parents to reduce school fees for the just began second term.

Speaking in Kisumu, Nyangwe said the proposal is unrealistic given the current high cost of living.

He asked parents to bear with the current situation noting that all sectors have been hit by high cost of living including prices of vital commodities used in learning institutions.

Nyangwe said that the only thing the government can do is extend the number of days pupils take in schools in order to recover days wasted.

He further said that the same could be done next year where schools will have a full calendar year pending further consultations with various stakeholders.

“Some of the holidays can also be shortened in order to recover the days lost,” the chairman said.
