Neglected Baringo school where students learn under trees

In Ngambo Primary School in Baringo County, learners study under trees as they fight harsh weather conditions such as strong wind blows, scorching sun and dust.

Two years ago, the school was swept away by Lake Baringo. Little efforts have been made to rebuild the school facilities and that has negatively affected learning in the institution.

The school head teacher, Parkolo Shariff, noted that the school has a total population of 342 students.  The school has only three permanent classrooms and two others made of iron sheets and a tent donated by Kenya Red Cross.

“We are used to this life. Our Grade 1 and 2 learners and those in class seven study under trees due to lack of enough classrooms. Our school was among the schools which were relocated due to the rising water after Lake Baringo broke its banks, “he added.

Speaking to the press, Shariff said that learners are most often distracted by animals who hover around the school.

The head teacher expressed concern that absenteeism is on the rise due to food shortage.

“The school feeding programme played a big role in encouraging learners to go to school. The swelling of the lake disrupted farming since farmers were displaced hence food access to the school is a big challenge at the moment,” he explained.

The principal called on well-wishers to intervene and help the school.
