TSC Directors decry opaqueness in teacher recruitment processes

By Peter Otuoro

Sub County Directors (SCDs) have urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to improve transparency, equity and fairness during the teacher recruitment process.

They said this during the five-day training on the Secondary Education Quality Improvement Programme (SEQIP) at ARC Hall at Egerton University, Nakuru County.

The SCDs complained on the opaqueness and lack of information on the recruitment process and selection criteria used and asked the Commission to come up with clear guidelines on the same.

They also suggested that people living with disability and vulnerable and marginalized communities should be represented in the recruitment panel which should also be constituted following the Constitution’s guidelines on gender equality.

They further encouraged TSC to increase the number of teachers being recruited to curb understaffing in schools and the acute teacher shortage in the country.

The Directors indicated that another thorny issue affecting them is transfer, replacement and retention of teachers in various regions and suggested that there should be a balanced criteria in transferring, retaining and replacing teachers.

One of the TSC officers added that some mixed secondary schools had a male teachers as the majority, placing the girls in a tricky situation putting into consideration the sensitive things affecting them which can only be handled adequately by female teachers.

“Girls have a lot of sensitive issues which only female teachers can handle. There is need to employ more female teachers in mixed schools to handle girls issues,” she said.
