Address poor performance in science subjects, teachers told

By Lydia Ngoolo

Eastern regional Director of Education Dr.William Sugut has called upon the teaching fraternity to put more effort towards teaching science subjects whose performance has been dismal.

He added that students should be equipped with the knowledge and skills which are key in life and will give them an edge over their peers.

“There is poor performance of science subjects in secondary schools and we should boost the performance for the betterment of our learners,” said Sugut.

He called upon students to take advantage of programmes being offered by the government as it was committed to ensuring that learners acquire quality education.

“Take advantage of these programmes because the government has invested a lot of resources in them for our good. We have programmes like EduAfya, textbooks provision and many others,” he said.

He warned students against drugs and substance abuse saying it had nothing in store except ruining their future.

Dr. Sugut was speaking during the commissioning of Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) classrooms in Mwala sub county, Machakos county.

He observed that the government had constructed 1,882 classrooms in Eastern region at a tune of Ksh. 1.4 billion.

“A total of 1,451 classes were constructed in the first phase while 431 were constructed in the second phase. Each class cost Ksh. 788,220,” he said.

He noted that with completion of construction of the classes, they were fully prepared for the transition to Junior Secondary Schools (JSSs) early next year.

Dr. Sugut was accompanied by Machakos county Director of Education Margaret Mwirigi, Mwala Quality and Standards Assurance Director Edna Ambasa and Mwala sub county Director of Education Stephen Kitungu.
