More than 2,000 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) learners from vulnerable families in 20 primary schools in Narok County will benefit from playing equipment meant to improve learning outcomes.

The project is an initiative of World Vision and Kenya National Library Services (KNLS).

World Vision cluster manager in charge of Narok and Bomet Counties Ms. Mirasine Meiguran said the project will be implemented in 18 months and is expected to improve the learning outcome of the targeted primary school children.

“The aim of this programme is to promote child wellbeing through sustained transformational development. It will also facilitate the empowerment of children, especially the vulnerable children,” said Meiguran.

Narok County Executive member in charge of Education and youth affairs Cecilia Wuapari acknowledged the implementers of the programme for promoting education in the county and asked learners to take advantage of the mobile library to benefit them and ensure they excel in academics.

Narok County Commissioner Isaac Masinde lauded the project and noted that the act of playing is a critical element in teaching early years education.

“The programme will go a long way in creating a bright future for the children. I call upon the schools and parents to allow children to play as they learn to improve on their education and psychological growth,” said Masinde.

The project, sponsored by Lego Foundation and Aga Khan Foundation, was launched at Olonganaiyo Primary School in Narok South Sub County.

The launch of the project came at a time  Lego Foundation was celebrating its 90 years anniversary with the theme,’ Build a world of play’ and aimed at creating awareness on the importance of play among children and the parents or caregivers.

The initiative will also strengthen the capacity of lower primary grade teachers to integrate play-based teaching and learning approaches in their classrooms.

The programme is also being implemented in Kakamega and Nairobi counties and targets about 6, 000 learners and 5, 000 caregivers in all the chosen counties.
