Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Vihiga Branch Executive Secretary Sabala Inyeni has ordered for the suspension of allowances for the Branch’s Governing Council members to allow its programmes to continue uninterrupted.

This follows a robbery incident that happened at Kima International School of Theology (KIST) where the branch Treasurer Mr. Benson Kidundu lost Kshs. 510,000 together with bank statements after his car was broken into by unknown assailants during the branch’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) last weekend.

According to Sabala, the money was meant to pay for fare reimbursements and cater for other logistical bills for teachers who attended the function.

He confirmed that the matter was reported at Luanda Police Station and investigations are currently ongoing.

Sabala added that the development forced the branch leadership to secure a loan from the Union’s National office to cater for the refunds, adding that the allowance suspension will go for one and a half months.

“KUPPET Vihiga runs so many programmes which have a huge financial implication on the treasury. For us to continue with these programmes, we have no option but to suspend allowances until this money is recovered. I know members will not be happy to hear this, but that is the price you have to pay in leadership,” said Sabala.

According to the KUPPET boss, the branch spends approximately Kshs. 400,000 monthly in allowances to the 18 Council members.
