VCs want Govt to establish Ministry of University Education

By Collins Akong’o

Vice Chancellors (VCs) of public universities have appealed to the government to establish the Ministry of University Education which shall deal directly with the management of universities in the country.

Speaking during the First International Annual Conference for the Public Universities Chairpersons of Council, Vice-Chancellors and Principals of Constituent Colleges, Principal Secretary (PS) for University Education and Research Amb. Simon Nabukwesi said that he would submit the suggestion to President Ruto together with other ideas concerning how to strengthen university education in the country.

Nabukwesi added that another fronted idea was to establish a task force to investigate challenges surrounding higher education including how to ensure that graduates secure employment after completion of their studies.

He noted that Colleges needed to develop creative revenue generation strategies to augment what they received from the government.

The PS further stated that the government was planning to empower those with capacity and interest in research by recognizing and supporting them with funding for their innovations so as to solve challenges facing the modern society.

Prof. Francis Aduol, Technical University of Kenya VC proposed that the dons should revise the rules governing universities as the government mulls over the formation of the said taskforce.
