Arati asks ministry to make climate change studies a compulsory subject

Kisii County governor Simba Arati has asked the Ministry of Education to introduce and make climate change a compulsory subject in all levels of education in the country.

Speaking at his office, Arati revealed that he met with the UN Deputy Secretary General Amina J. Mohammed with whom he held a conversation on climate change and its impending devastating effects.

“My colleagues and I met the UN Deputy Secretary General and we had a fruitful conversation on climate change and actions we should take as a community,” he briefed.

The governor asked teachers to take personal initiative to create awareness to their students and the public about climate change and its effects.

“We must pay keen attention to this global calamity now and how it will affect the future,” he said.

Arati said that unless everyone unites to eradicate the global disaster, the phenomenon would lead to, for one, the rise in sea level and consequently flood coastal lands.

He asked citizens to tone down on activities accelerating climate change such as deforestation, burning of fossil fuels and excessive emission of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
