KUPPET boss says teachers happy to teach despite burning issues

Kenya Union of Post-Primary Teachers (KUPPET) Kitui County Executive Secretary Benjamin Kioko Mutia has said that as much as teachers were happy to teach, they still had myriad of challenges they were facing.

Speaking to the media in his office during celebrations to mark this year’s World Teachers Day themed ‘The transformation of education begins with teachers’, Kioko asked the President and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to look into their burning issues for the benefit of the teachers and learners.

“There was no increase in our salaries in the last year. The cost of living is high. The prices of basic commodities are high while our salaries keep stagnating,” Mutia said.

He asked the TSC to employ more teachers to deal with the country;s perennial teacher shortage.

“The new system – the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) requires many teachers for it to succeed thus TSC need to uip their game,” the unionist said.

Mutia further said that the TSC should hasten to pick a medical insurance provider soon so teachers are assured that their health is well taken care of.

He lamented that many teachers went for as long as a decade before they got promotions and asked the employer to review the promotion policy.

Elsewhere, the Kitui Early Childhood Education Training Centre (KECETRAC) Director Patrick Keli Mbunzi lauded teachers for their role that they play as educationists globally.
