Over one hundred youth from Elgeyo Marakwet County are set to benefit from an airlifting program signed between the county and Canadian education institutions.

According to governor Wesley Rotich, the program is aimed at providing education and employment opportunities to the youth in a bid to expand advancement of education accessibility and connecting citizens to job opportunities abroad.

Speaking at his Iten office while meeting representatives of the Canadian High commission, Rotich said the programme was in line with his pledged campaign dubbed ‘Pepea’ which intends to ease access to education in overseas countries.

The governor said that the programme targets the youth from humble and marginalized backgrounds and those from insecurity-prone areas to enable them further their studies and transform their lives.

“We are focusing on students from humble background, marginalized and insecurity-prone areas across the county. It is only education that can be used as a bridge to transform such areas,” Rotich remarked.

He called on the Canadian Embassy in Kenya to ease visa processing of the students traveling to the North American nation.

Canadian High Commission representative Crista M’clnnis, who led the team, applauded the county government for identifying the colleges in Canada for partnership. She gave assurance that the students who will be selected for the programs will have smooth traveling logistics.

“I am elated that you have identified our institutions for Elgeyo Marakwet students. We will ensure that everything is okay for those who will be travelling,” she said.
