Wikipedia programme to train secondary school teachers is now open

By Education News Reporter

Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom (RWIC), the Wikimedia Foundation’s flagship teacher training program which helps educators and their learners to develop vital media and information literacy skills for the 21st century is now open.

The 12-week Media and Information literacy program promotes a critical engagement with Wikipedia that allows teachers to leverage its use as a pedagogical tool, especially secondary school teachers.

Through a collaboratively-developed curriculum, teachers explore and reflect on the different features that make Wikipedia a valuable ally to their classroom practice. The synchronous training sessions allow teachers to collaborate with experienced instructors and share their questions, learn from global experiences, and connect with like-minded peers.

Teachers who participate in the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program develop key media and information literacy skills by understanding:

  1. How information is produced on Wikipedia
  2. How to access and evaluate content online
  3. How to identify biases and knowledge gaps in the information they consume
  4. How educators can actively contribute to the development of Wikipedia

The educational resources created are available on Wikimedia Commons for anybody interested to learn more about the program.

Teachers who successfully complete the training will receive certification that will help them utilize Wikipedia to facilitate learning, and contribute to future iterations of the program.

Participation and enrollment is free of charge.
