Rwanda government has raised primary teachers’ salary by 88 percent and their secondary school counterparts by 40 percent.

In a statement released recently, the Ministry of Education Minister Dr. Valentine Uwamariya, indicated that net salaries of certificate holders in the teaching profession which currently starts at 50,849 RWF (Ksh.5,856) will go up to Ksh.11,010 from August 2022.

Diploma holders will get a 40 percent increase of net starting salary of RWF 54,916 (Ksh.6,324) from RWF 77,233 (Ksh.8,800).

For a teacher recruited and paid on the basis of AO degree (total of 17,547 teachers) their net salary will increase by 40% to RWF 70,195 (Ksh.8,084).

“The salaries for Head teachers, Deputy Head teachers and support staff working in public and government-aided schools have also been revised upwards. These decisions come into force from the payment of the teacher salaries of August 2022,” the statement added.

Kenyan teachers through The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) have been demanding increase of their salaries due to high cost of living.

They have been demanding reviewing of the 2021-25 collective bargaining agreement that will see their salary increased by 60% although the Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has been quoted a number of times indicating that the country’s education sector is the most funded in Africa.
