Take stern action against principals surcharging fees, parents urge Magoha

The Kenya National Parents Association chairperson Nicholas Maiyo has called on the Ministry of Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) George Magoha to take stern action against schools overcharging school fees.

Speaking to the press in Eldoret town, Maiyo said that it’s sad that despite the Ministry of education reducing schools fees due to the effects of Covid-19, there are still some schools charging the same amount or even more.

“The Covid-19 effects are still with us. We have had short terms and we had requested the Ministry of Education to reduce the fees which they did but its sad that some schools have chosen to ignore the instructions. We are calling upon the Ministry of Education to take stern actions against such schools,” said the chairperson.

He noted that parents are supposed to pay Sh 45, 000 for National schools and Sh 35,000 for   extra county schools.

While urging them to report and forward fees structures for schools overcharging them, he asked parents across the country not to pay extra levies but instead stick to the fees stipulated in their fees structures.

“I want to ask parents across the country to forward fees structures of schools overcharging them and together with the Ministry of Education we promise to take stern actions against them,” said Maiyo.

He later expressed support for the move by the Ministry of Education to close schools ahead of the August polls.

“We support the government’s directive to close schools ahead of the August 9th polls. This is in order since most of the schools are used as polling stations and this will give the electoral body adequate time for preparations.” Maiyo concluded.
