Severe hunger in Taita-Taveta pushes children out of school

By Tsozungu Kombe

Over 100 pupils in Taita Taveta County do not attend school due to severe hunger, Education News has learnt.

This was revealed by the county Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Executive Secretary Mr. Lennox Mshila, who said the prolonged drought has seen many families unable to feed their children.

The most affected areas are in Voi Sub-county such as Maungu, Kasigau Mbololo and Sagala, among others.

He said the prevailing situation threatened to get out of hand and asked the government to take quick measures to ensure children go to school.

He suggested the revival of the School Feeding Programme (SFP) as one way addressing the problem.
