Schools brace for a hectic second term packed with academics, sports

As schools open for second term, learners in various institutions are gearing to complete the syllabus and at the same time planning for co curriculum activities.

First term ought to have been for athletics but due to the circumstances caused by the prevalence of Covid-19, the activities did not take place. Second term is slotted for ball games and plans are underway to have the activities on.

Education News visited various institutions in Homa Bay and Migori counties to assess their preparedness.

At Orero boys in Homa Bay county, the Principal Mr. Dickens Bula said the school is in top gear to harmonize all school activities. He said that the school was fully prepared to admit students in junior secondary and at the same time on track to complete the syllabus on time to maintain the school’s exemplary performance in national examinations.

At the same time at Asumbi girls, the Principal Pinto Sati said the year has been unique and both the learners and teachers have created extra lessons in order to complete the academic schedules and at the same time participate in the planned co curricula activities. Both schools are in Homa Bay County.

Meanwhile in Migori County, Kodero Bara secondary school principal Isack Okeyo said that plans for the implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) are underway and the school is ready for admission of junior secondary learners. He said the school was well equipped to meet the challenges of the short school calendar year.

At primary level in Uriri sub county, schools such as Odeny Odhoch, Kanyodera Masoge, Piny Owacho, and Mark Nyamita confirmed that the first term had been very short and has forced them to create extra time to meet challenges. At Odeny Odhoch primary school, the Sports Director Caleb Maina said the school is ready for the planned co curriculum activities and at the same time dedicated their time to equally excel in academics.

The area Member of Parliament Mark Nyamita while visiting various schools in the constituency said that education is his priority and has set a colossal amount of money for construction and rehabilitation of all schools in the constituency.

He said that as the calendar of schools resumes to normal, he will ensure that the schools are well equipped to sustainable standards to enable learners acquire all-rounded education. He also promised to ensure that all schools are connected to the power grid to make CBC learning accessible.
