Fire has razed down a makeshift dormitory at Moi Suba Girls high school in Migori a day to schools reopening for second term.

The inferno which started on Sunday at 7pm has left a total of 68 students affected after all their belongings were completely ravaged.

Attempts by neighbours to put off the fire using extinguishers and water were as the structure was razed to the ground.

Confirming the incident, Migori County Diirector of Education Jacob Onyiego told Education News that the cause of the fire is yet to be established but investigations are underway.

“Investigations have started and we trust the security personnel to unravel the what might have caused the fire. We are lucky that no student was in school and therefore this will give time, however little to make arrangements on how to accommodate those who were occupying the affected dormitory when they return to school,” said Onyiego.

The school Deputy Principal Oyier Milka also confirmed hat the fire started in the evening after masons who were building in the neighborhood raised alarm that attracted Good Samaritans who tried their best to put out the fire using water, fire extinguishers and even called the county fire engine that arrived late and could not salvage anything.

“We shall have an alternative place to accommodate the affected students whom we expect to report to school from today evening,” she said.
