The University of Nairobi (UoN) has suspended a total of ten (10) common undergraduate courses from its list of courses offered at the university.
Communication Skills, Fundamentals of Development and their Applications, Human Health, Law in Society, Environmental Science, Chemistry and its Applications, Science and Technology in Development, Elements of Philosophy, Elements of Economics and HIV/AIDS will now not be offered at the university effective 2022/2023 Academic Year.
In an internal memo from the University’s Deputy Vice-chancellor (DVC) Academic Affairs Prof. Julius Okeng’o – who is also the Professor of Human Anatomy – to Chairpersons of departments dated September 19, 2022; the university noted that the decision was arrived at after a senate special meeting held on September 8, 2022 hence they should be excluded from course registration.
“By a copy of this memo, the Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is required to withdraw them from the system all together,” directed Prof Okeng’o in the memo which was copied to the University’s Vice-Chancellor, ICT Director, Academic Registrar and Deans of Faculties.
Early this year, the University announced fresh plans to trim courses after it scrapped more than 250 units in 2021, a situation that sent an early signal of layoff of lecturers amid a cash crunch at the institution.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama said that the university would restrict hirings to critical departments and trim more courses from the current 324 with more focus on engineering, medicine and IT.
