500 bright but needy students from Kajiado county have a reason to smile after they received scholarships from the Kajiado county government.

Speaking while issuing out the cheques, Governor Joseph Ole Lenku said that the beneficiaries were selected after a rigorous vetting process.

He said the scholarship scheme will benefit 300 students in secondary schools and 200 in colleges and universities.

“My government is keen on ensuring that needy students from the area attain education,” he said.

He revealed that his government decided to introduce the scholarship kitty after the realization that the  bursary kitty wasn’t enough to cater for the school fees of those who were too underprivileged.

He pointed out that the scholarship beneficiaries were from child rescue centres and slums.

The governor expressed his desire to increase the number of beneficiaries to 1,000 when reelected.

Nicola Aoko, one of the beneficiaries, couldn’t hide her joy at how her luck had changed.

She said that she had started working as a house help to raise fees for her secondary education since her parents couldn’t afford to pay her fees.

She also promised to work hard.

The Kajiado county scholarship scheme is in addition to the Shs 150 million bursary scheme that will benefit 10,000 students this year.
