Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) now wants the government, through the Ministry of interior to enhance security in the volatile Kerio Valley as schools open.

Speaking to the press in Eldoret town, KNUT National Executive Council (NEC) member representing Rift Valley, Sammy Bor, said  they will not allow teachers to continue teaching if  security will not be enhanced.

“As KNUT officials, we are not happy with what is happening in Kerio Valley where insecurity is the order of the day, we are calling on the government to enhance security before the schools open as we do not want our teachers and learners to sufferer in the hands of bandits,” said Bor.

He reiterated that they want the students and teachers to have a conducive learning environment since they cannot learn when insecurity is imminent in the region.

“Security in the region has been volatile and we wondering why the government is taking time to solve the matter, how many people does the government  want them to lose lives before taking actions,” Bor added.

He said that if the government will not solve the matter they will be forced to withdraw their members from the region thus paralyzing learning.

“Come next term, if the situation will still be the same, we will be forced to take unspecified action as leaders of the union. We will remove all teachers from the region until their security is guaranteed.

We are not ready to lose the live of any single teacher. We will mobilize teachers not to go to school and close all schools in Kerio Valley,” said Bor.
