Tana River Bodaboda riders have been warned against preying on school girls. The warning comes amidst alleged cases of rape, defilement and surging teenage pregnancies linked to riders in the region.
Tana River Boda-boda Chairman Ibrahim Kunyo said some riders are hired by sex predators to ferry the minors promoting the sex vices.
“Our youth are taken advantage of during this long holiday due to their desperation to earn money offered to transport schoolgirls,’’ he told education news.
He said they either carry the victims to guest houses or to the culprit’s homes thus promoting rape, defilement or early pregnancies.
“Sadly, some crooked motorbike operators defile the school girls, ending in the said vices,’’ Kunyo noted, adding that some schoolgirls adore the motorbike operators who end up luring them.
He said some purportedly ferry the girls for free and ask for sex as payment while some school girls offer themselves as means for the payment.
“In order to bring sanity to the industry all Bodaboda must avoid being sex vermin and bad seeds in the society. We therefore must report cases of such culprits and desist from sexual engagement with school girls, as fight against sexually gender bases violence must be won,’’ he said.
He said obtaining the right training in driving and getting a driving licence and insurance licences were important and that school boys should not engage in the business.
“Those who contravene the laid rules will have themselves to blame, and school boys who might be engaging in making some quick buck must do so with proper papers and shun engaging in criminal activities,” he warned.
