Girls still lead as scores for top candidates’ drops

By Roy Hezron

Girls have maintained the lead in the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) this time taking six position out of the top 14 candidates nationally which presents a slight drop compared to the 2020 KCPE results where there were eight girls out of 15 top candidates nationally.

While releasing the results at Kenya National Examination Council’s (KNEC) offices in Nairobi on March 28, 2022 Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha said that he is impressed that the mark range between candidates in the top 10 places is only 3 points adding that the Female candidates have taken six places nationally.

Although the marks scored by the top candidate in the 2021 KCPE dropped by 5 marks from 433 marks in 2020 to 428 marks in 2021, Prof. Magoha noted that the mean average performance and quality of grades for all candidates in this year’s KCPE is higher.

“Whereas 8,091 (0.68 per cent) candidates scored between 400 and 500 marks in the 2020 KCPE, the number increased to 11,857 (0.97 per cent) in the 2021 KCPE. This is an indicator that most candidates scored better scores than the previous year. I wish to commend all the teachers, parents and candidates for this good performance, during challenging period,” said Prof. Magoha.

Unlike in 2020 KCPE where the top candidate was a girl, Faith Mumo from Kari Mwailu Primary School emerged top with 433 marks; the 2021 KCPE candidate was a boy, Magata Bruce Mackenzie from Gilgil Hills Academy with 428 Marks.

In the 2019 KCPE results, the top four positions were evenly shared between both genders. Andy Michael Munyiri was the top performer with 440 marks.
