The County government of Nyamira has been told to put money aside for the training of local divers who will assist during disasters especially along the rivers and water bodies around the county.

Speaking at the banks of River Sondu where the body of a student who drowned was being retrived, Nyamira County Senatorial aspirant Mr. Adams Mochenwa decried the  shortage of divers in the area.

He disclosed that most of the County Disaster Management teams are inexperienced persons who were picked to fill the gaps.

He thanked the divers from Kisumu who braved the cold temperatures to search for the body, an exercise that took them three days. The body was retreaved from the river on Sunday evening.

“We need men of courage to  have such abilities for rescuing services in the society,” he said.

The victim, identified as Dennis Ayusa, was an 18-year old secondary school student from Bokeira ward who had gone to swim with his friends.

The body was taken to Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary as burial arrangements are underway.

Nyamira North Sub-county Police boss Mr. Patrick Ngeiywa while confirmed his death, cautioned the residents against swimming in the river as the water currents are high.
