The Mombasa County Director for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), Libraries Department and ICT, Mwangi Gichui has called on the Ministry of Education to incorporate robotics in the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) to take the new education system into greater heights.
Talking to Education News on phone, Gichui said that following the very successful recently concluded robotics competition in Mombasa, there was need to infuse the robotics programme in the CBC.
“The robotics programme is targeting PP2 pupils. It should be incorporated in the CBC for learners to continue with it in other higher grades so as to improve innovative thinking especially in Mombasa where we have planted innovation clubs in schools to ensure continuity,” Gichui said.
Gichui further urged parents to support their children in learning technology in preparation for the future.
He predicted that the fourth industrial revolution will be technology driven and that they are already developing a human capital at an early age.
He added that the robotics programme has been hailed by Jomo Kenyatta University, Mombasa Campus who partnered with them in the robotics competition.
Gichui revealed that Jomo Kenyatta University had tailor-made courses to train students in technology and robotics.
“Information Technology is the way to go and with the advent of artificial intelligence, it is high time the Ministry of Education incorporated the robotics machine in CBC,’’ he pleaded.
Gichui added that if one can nurture the young minds at the formative age, then they can get to university innovation that can be commercialized to international standards in the world market.
