Relocate factory for polluting school environment, Presidential hopeful asks

Fredrick Odiero

Presidential aspirant Mr. Reuben Kigame has called for the immediate relocation of a sugar factory that is adjacent to a special primary school in Kisumu County.

Kigame said Kibos Sugar and Allied Industries is a source of air pollution to Kibos School for the Blind and that the factory should be moved to another location.

Kigame who toured the learning institution, which he attended more than 40 years ago said the factory has been emitting smoke, dust and even injecting chemicals to the nearby river.

The musician, during his visit donated assorted food stuffs at the school and said that the government should reconsider reverting special schools to management of churches as the case used to be before.

“Such schools used to be managed by the Salvation Army, Catholics and Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya,” he said.

Human rights activists have also not been left behind as they have been pushing for the relocation of the factory.

A parliamentary committee has in the past queried the pollution case from the factory management.

Kigame said the government should also consider more funds to the learning institution to increase more facilities and equipment.

He said such vital items like brails and abacus for learning purposes are hard to come by in such special schools.

Kigame said students with special needs can make it to any heights and gave himself as an example.

“I first went to Nairobi through music and later traveled abroad through the same” he said, encouraging the students to work hard as there was no limit.

Earlier, Kigame discounted the notion that the presidential race is a two horse race affair.

“We are not horses and they probably don’t know how to count since we are many aspirants” he said on a light note.

Kigame said he is the best bet for the presidency.
