Students and teachers at Matungulu Girls High School in Machakos County are going through revision material in preparation for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination which will be done in March. This is after the school completed the syllabus in good time.

The School Chief Principal, Lucy Kariuki said candidates were well prepared for KCSE examinations, adding that they had done many tests and prepared them thoroughly.

“We prepared our students to ensure that they were confident and conversant with key topics,” she added.

She concedes that revision is taxing to teachers and candidates but adds that it is worth the cause as teachers are able to accurately assess their students’ strengths and weaknesses.

She is confident that the students will do better than last year’s candidates.

Mrs. Karuiki said the candidates have been revising past examinations papers and texts from others schools to compare notes as they completed the syllabus early enough.

“Our candidates are embarking on revision and we use our time effectively. Time for lunch is shortened for candidates and this has helped complete the syllabus in time and we do this to ensure that candidates are confident by the time they sit the national examinations,” she added.

The school Dean of Studies Mrs. Jane Maundu said they completed the syllabus at the beginning of the term and now has embarked on intensive revision and group discussions with the students.

She said the teachers were engaging the candidates after the normal teaching hours with a view to preparing them adequately for the examinations.

Adding to this, candidates say they completed the syllabus in time, something that gave them time to begin revision.

Annastacia Mukui, a18-year-old student says teachers have drilled them on the structure and format of all examination papers.

“I am well prepared without any doubt since I have revised the most challenging subjects and seen a lot of past papers, teachers also helped us a lot,” Annastacia who wants to be a doctor told Education News during an interview at school.

Joyce Njeri, another 18-year-old student says she is well prepared for all the examinations.

“I am well prepared for the KCSE exams because I have covered the syllabus and I am expecting to get good results,” she said.

The KCSE examination is being done by the students in March following a recent directive by the Ministry of Education after the disruption of the school calendar by the coronavirus pandemic.
