Teachers asked to seek elective political positions

By Enock Okong’o

Teachers across the country have been urged to seek elective political positions in the forthcoming general elections.

Former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Gucha sub county executive secretary Mr Isaiah Nyariki said that teachers have been tested in leadership positions across the globe and they have proved to be good leaders.

Speaking at Gesere DEB primary school in Ibeno ward in Kisii County, Mr Nyariki asked the teaching fraternity from Kisii County to support their own who will be seeking to represent them in the next government.

He thanked Mrs Lucy Machuki for her interest in the county’s woman representative’s seat.

‘Put your best foot forward and win the election and serve Kisii county residents in the best way you can.’ He encouraged her.

Speaking during the same meeting where she presided over the education day and prize giving ceremony, Mrs Machuki expressed confidence in winning Kisii county woman representative’s seat.

Mrs Machuki, who is serving her second term as the Gucha branch KNUT executive secretary, talked of how she had wrestled it out with men and other women for her seat in KNUT leadership and emerged victorious.

‘I have walked a long way in the teaching profession which I love. I have managed to be successful because of teachers who have fully supported me,’ she said.

She revealed that her devotion to the service of teachers and the general public saw her rise to be a member of KNUT National Executive Council.

“I have diligently served our people in my small way but I believe that those who are honest in small things will be given bigger ones to manage.” She briefed.

Mrs Machuki, who has been named the queen of Nyanza for being the only female executive secretary from the region, said that championing for quality education for the girl child and other child rights programmes will be her priority once she is elected as the woman representative.

‘I believe that if you educate a girl, you educate the whole world,’ she said.

She said her role models include former President of Liberia Ellen Johnson and the Vice President of the US Mrs. Kamala Harris.

The unionist said the Competency Based Curriculum has embraced the holistic academic and career development of children.

She promised that if elected, she will use her office to ensure that CBC gains momentum in the country.

The executive secretary is determined to replace the incumbent Mrs Janet Ong’era.  She will be competing against Doline Bwari, Peris Onsarigo, Sarah Nyaenya, Esther Nyaronge and former Royal Media Services radio presenter Doris Donya Aburi.
