Kenyatta university Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainana has raised concern over poor performance in  neighbouring Kiwanja Secondary School which obtained 62Es, several Ds and only two Cs in last year’s KCSE results.

The VC was speaking during the launch of a book, ‘Before Two Become One, Navigating Marital Relationship’ by Dr. Rubai Mandela at Ruiru Hotel.

“It is rather upsetting for us that a school that borders one of the premier regional universities gets several Es in KCSE,’’ said the VC who regretted that none of the students will immediately proceed to university.

He lamented that instead of students struggling and working hard to join universities they put no efforts and eventually fail terribly.

Prof. Wainaina took issue with the school’s lack of self-drive to learn, accusing   the students of never visiting the prime university for motivational talk or normal tours to familiarize and acquaint themselves with the pinnacle of education.

“We have been receiving students from across the country who come here to have a feel of the university environment, with view of revitalizing their passion to learn, but this hasn’t been the case with Kiwanja secondary, which is less than five minutes’ walk’’ he said.

He further said that as education stakeholders, they have taken note of the uninspiring performance and are working on modalities to motivate the school to take education more seriously.

The VC however attributed the dismal performance to indiscipline of parents dismissing education as unimportant and failure to provide conducive learning environment for the children.

Although the VC alleged that students at the school abused drugs sold by the local community and that school management is helpless to deal with the challenge.

He promised to partner with stakeholders to weed out the drug menace in the school.

‘’We will motivate the students to perform better,’’ he said.
