Three Chogoria Girls’ students and a driver of a 14 seater Nissan matatu they were travelling in today morning perished in a grisly road accident at Kambiti area in Muranga County.

The vehicle was travelling from Meru to Nairobi when it was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry that was travelling from the opposite direction.
The students were travelling to Nairobi for December holidays from the national school in Tharaka – Nithi County when the fateful accident occurred.

Confirming the incident,Murang’a South sub County Police Commander Alexander Shikondi said the matatu collided head-on with an oncoming lorry.

The matatu belonging to MARK One Sacco that plies Nairobi-Meru route was ferrying 14 students at the time of the accident that caused a huge traffic snarl up on the Sagana-Kenol Road.

The matatu was trying to overtake another vehicle when it collided head-on with a lorry that was carrying potatoes.

“The matatu was heading to Nairobi when the grisly road accident occurred. The 10 injured passengers were rushed to surrounding hospitals for treatment.

We have already informed Chogoria Girls High School administration of the accident. I urge all road users to exercise caution on the roads during the festive season,” said the police boss.

He said some of the road accidents can be avoided if everyone behave responsibly.

He said the bodies were taken to Thika Level 5 hospital mortuary for postmortem analysis while the two vehicles were towed to Makuyu police station.

Tharaka-Nithi County Director of Education Ms Bridget Wambua said she has received the news but was yet to get the full details.

Last week a bus driver died while five pupils were injured in an accident on the Gakungu- Kirimiri road in Murang’a South Sub County.

Mr. Shikondi said the driver was reported to have lost control of the vehicle as it negotiated a sharp bend.
