By Philemon Kiprop

Students have been asked to focus on their education and shun distractors for them to excel in their academics.

Nominated member of Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly Neddy Kiptoo has said that students are faced with meaningless distractors that have costed them much in their academic journey.

Speaking at Tot Secondary School, Kiptoo said students fail to achieve their destinies for engaging in activities that are not in tandem with education policies, adding that it derails the academic performance of an individual student, eventually impacting negatively on society.

Kiptoo singled out early marriages, romantic relationships in school and early pregnancies as the major deterrence to achieving academic excellence.

“We are losing most of our students to distractors that have robbed them of academic excellence. It is disturbing to see our children engage in activities that cost their studies. Early marriages, relationships, and teenage pregnancies are the major enemies of academic excellence in our schools”, she remarked.

She at the same time urged stakeholders strengthen their mission of shaping learners’ future by ensuring a conducive environment to enable students excel in their studies.

She asked learners to think individually and aspire to change the communities they come from, saying education was the only agent of change that would revitalize the society for the better.
