Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has partnered with Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to incorporate tax education in the secondary school syllabus.
Speaking during the launch of a tax club at Kyeni Girls, KRA Northern region coordinator Nicholas Kinoti said that other than AIC Chebisaas Boys in Rift Valley and Kagumo High in Central province, tax education syllabus will be incorporated in three more schools.
He noted that the content being taught covers a wide range of tax administration matters ranging from the meaning of tax, uses of tax, the mandate of KRA and tax audit process amongst others.
‘The partnership aims at maintaining and mainstreaming tax training in the new Competence Based Curriculum to equip leaners with requisite tax education and mould them into responsible taxpayers.’ Kinoti said
He added that schools are the right ground for implementing the project as they will go a long way in changing how future generations look at taxation.
Kinoti said the on-going reforms in the education curriculum offered them the right opportunity to introduce tax education in schools and to realize their vision of disseminating tax knowledge to the people.
‘’We expect the learners to be our envoys in training and creating awareness on taxation which will also go a long way in defying the tax jargon for the commoner,’’ said Kinoti.
He added that the trickledown effect on the project will bring a phenomenal change amongst taxpayers and create efficiency in taxation and voluntary compliance.
He revealed that they have a challenge of bringing some schools on board on since they aren’t tax compliant.
Leah Ngesa, the Principal of Kyeni Girls, hailed the move saying it will help Kenyans understand and appreciate their tax paying obligation.
