MP forms committee to investigate school fire

By Enock Okong’o

Nyaribari Masaba Member of Parliament Mr. Ezekiel Machogu has formed a five-man committee to look into a fire outbreak at Amabuko Secondary School in Kisii County.

The MP gave the committee an ultimatum as he urged the school principal not to close the school but instead find ways of housing the affected students so as to continue with their studies.

“I have given you two weeks to give a comprehensive feedback to my office on the cause of this fire,” He ordered.

During the evening incident, the fire reduced the dormitory into ashes bringing losses to about 50 students who lost their bedding and stationery.

The MP later donated 50 mattresses and 100 blankets to the affected students for them to start over.

“There is no need of sending our children home when we can support them to continue with learning,” he said.

Machogu then gave a cheque of Sh500, 000 to the school management as seed money for starting the construction of the new dormitory. He asked the principal to use the Sh1.2 million that was in the school account to complete the dormitory.

Machogu who served for a long time as District Commissioner during both President Moi and Kibaki’s regimes asked schools in the county to form disaster management committees to monitor arsons in their institutions.

He asked the Ministry of Education and the TSC to find alternative means for schools rather than closing them.

The administrator now turned politician further asked all education stakeholders to find long lasting solutions of arsons in schools which he said, had taken disastrous roots in the country.

The legislator condemned the countrywide schools as it derails progress in education.
