Students have been left counting losses after fire burnt down two dormitories in two different schools in Busia County.
In the first incident, fire gutted a dormitory at John Osogo Secondary School in Budalangi constituency.
No property was salvaged during the morning fire incident that burnt down the whole of Habenga dormitory which houses at least 50 students.
Efforts by the students and teachers to put off the fire were not successful due to the enormity of the fire which is suspected to have been caused by an electric fault although it is yet to be confirmed.
This is the second fire incident in the school this year alone. Early in the year, fire burnt down the Deputy Principal’s office destroying property worth thousands of shillings. Its cause is yet to be established to date.
In another fire incident in Butula sub-county, fire burnt down a dormitory at Butula Girls Secondary School leaving over 60 students without basic needs including school uniforms.
Fire brigades from Busia Gounty government arrived at the school an hour later and put off the fire although it had already destroyed significant amount of property inside the dormitory.
Its cause was not immediately established as it was the first fire incident in the school.
Busia County has this year witnessed increased cases of fire incidents in schools with Sigalame High School in Samia registering the highest cases (four cases last term only).
Other cases have been witnessed at Chamasiri Secondary School in Teso North sub-county, Namboboto and Ganjala Secondary Schools in Samia sub-county.
