A girl’s school is to be built in Tudor, Mombasa County in honour of Mekatilili wa Menza, who fought against colonial rule in the early 19th century.

Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamad Nassir said he will use the National Government –Constituencies Development Funds (NG-CDF) to build Mekatilili wa Menza Girls secondary school.

The MP said the school will honour the Mijikenda pre-independence activist, who led the Giriama community against the British colonial administration in Kenya between 1912 and 1915.

“Soon, we shall have a ground breaking ceremony for the school in Tudor,’’ Nassir said.

In addition, the MP said he had halted the construction of new schools in the constituency so that all the existing schools are upgraded and rehabilitated arguing that there was no need of building new schools yet the existing ones were in deplorable conditions.

The aspiring governor revealed that since the number of students had increased in Majengo and Mbeheni primary schools, he had a responsibility to gift the learners a favourable learning environment.

“We also have a duty to sink boreholes and install desalination machines in all schools within Mvita constituency,’’ said the MP who concluded that he was proud that the children will have clean drinking water.
