Children’s officer decries high numbers of child abuse cases

Kenyenya sub county children’s officer Mr. Solomon Maisori has decried the high numbers of child abuse cases in the region.

Speaking to Education News, Maisori said there is need to sensitize communities against child abuse because the practice violets children’s rights.

He attributed the high cases to lack of information from parents and urged the media to do more to raise awareness on the issue.

‘Parents who neglect their children and deny them access to their basic needs will be arrested and judged in courts of law,’ he said.

He expressed concern that the county had recorded 37 percent cases of negligence since the beginning of the year. He added that the police were dealing with the suspects.

‘My office in conjunction with the local education offices will soon roll out an outreach programme aimed at sensitizing the common mwananchi about the rights of children,’ he revealed.

Maisori urged parents of children living with disability to treat them like their able bodied counterparts.
