Nyamira parents, teachers asked to intensify guidance and counseling

By Enock Okong’o

Nyamira County Police Commander Mr. Patrick Ngeiywa has asked parents and teachers to intensify the guidance and counseling services among the youth in order to avoid the rampant suicide cases in the area.

Speaking at Ekerenyo town, the officer decried the high rate of deaths among the youth and attributed it to abuse of drags and the sale of illicit brews to the school children.

His caution came shortly after his officers collected the body of a school girl from her home after she allegedly committed suicide.

According to the mother of the deceased, the girl came from school and entered her room where she took the cattle spray before dying on the spot.

“She did not leave any suicidal note behind to explain the mysterious death,” said the bereaved mother.

The police identified the body as Faith Monyangi Gichana, aged 15 from Ekerenyo village in Nyamira County. Untill her death, she was a student at Kamu Secondary School.

Her body was taken to Ekerenyo Sub-county Hospital  Mortuary for postmortem, pending police  investigations.

The death comes barely a week after a standard five girl committed suicide at Bomorenda village in Kisii County.

Reporting about the incident, Kisii South Community Policing Chairman Mr. Elijah Omwega, asked the church and other social community workers to find other possible ways of curbing the vice in the region.
