At least 50 students from Ofafa Jericho High School were admitted in hospital for smoke inhalation in the attempt to put out fire which broke out in one of the school’s dormitory on Monday, 20th September.

The students were admitted at Metropolitan Hospital in Buruburu, Nairobi after severely inhaling smoke. There were no burns or other injuries reported after the inferno.

The fire which lasted for over an hour was put out by the combined efforts of the fire fighters from the county and police officers from a neighboring police station.

The Metropolitan Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Kanyenje Gakombe said that no student is at risk or suffered any burn wounds.

“We received 50 young men reported to have been in a fire incident at their school. They tried to put out the fire and in the process inhaled the smoke. Most of them have suffered smoke inhalation attacks,” he said.

He noted that few of the students needed admission at the hospital for 24 hours to be monitored, although all of them were out of danger.

Gakombe affirmed that the hospital had the capacity to handle the situation as he had earlier received calls from other hospitals for assistance to cater for the injure students.

“Some students have been moved to MP Shah, Nairobi Women, and Avenue hospitals,” Gakombe admitted.
