The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development has asked teachers implementing the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) to give learners reasonable assignments.
In a move to arrest public outcry over the ambiguity of extended work to learners, the curriculum body said assignments should be within the abilities of pupils and pocket friendly to the parents.
There has been hue and cry among parents in the recent past over what they termed as incurring costs in a bid to meet work given to their children from school.
Education stakeholders have raised varied opinions on the implementation of the new curriculum with some castigating the component of parent involvement as a leeway of extorting money from parents.
“The spirit of CBC is to leverage on readily available materials to facilitate learning. Tasks involving undue costs to parents should be avoided”, read a social media post by KICD in part.
KICD also called on parents to support learners by offering a conducive environment for studying and providing for the required materials to enable smooth implementation of the curriculum.
Parents have also been empowered to report any unsuitable homework with the school head teachers or at the ministry of education offices countrywide.
