Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has asked the National Government to fully fund or subsidize the implementation of the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) to ensure its success.

Speaking during a prize giving ceremony at Mabole secondary school in Butere sub county,

Oparanya said a lot of resources should be invested in infrastructure development in schools.

“The new education system is good but the government did not plan adequately before rolling it out,” he said.

Oparanya argued that the new system will have a heavy economic impact on the country’s economy as schools will require more classrooms, dormitories and other facilities.

The County chief said effects of the new system will be felt in 2023 when schools will be required to have double Form one intake.

He commended Mabole secondary school for their sterling performance in last year’s KCSE examination.

He issued out Shs138, 000 cash award to the teachers and feted top candidates including Harun Sami Wafula who scored A plain in last year’s KCSE examination.

Oparanya revealed that Shs 120 million had been put aside for County HELB to support university education of bright and needy children.

The governor noted that centers of excellence have been set up in 25 secondary schools while a similar number of primary schools have been supported through building of classrooms and other facilities.

He reiterated that the County supports 35 students enrolled in various universities in China.

County Executive Committee Member for Education Dr George Lutomia, Chief Officer Dr Irene Ashioya and Butere Sub County Administrator Madam Joyce Wafukho were among leaders present.
