Special needs secondary schools have termed the roll out of the Competency Based Curriculum(CBC) in their institutions as the best move to support hands on learning.
Samuel Demba, the principal of Fr. Ouderaa secondary school for the Hearing Impaired in Siaya County, stated that deaf students will benefit from the practical aspects of training which will make them score well.
“Just like International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum, CBC gives choices. We know which talent our students have and we will encourage and work on them,” he noted.
He urged the government to steer the implementation process by availing adequate resources for CBC success.
Demba also talked of the facility challenge for the CBC roll out in special schools noting that children in social sciences, arts, sports and performing arts will need facilities for the same.
“When a child comes for senior high school, they’ll focus on one area which will be tested for certification. That therefore means that the government must be ready to fund the schools to put up necessary facilities.” he said.
He also said that teachers should be properly trained to change their attitudes towards the CBC roll out.
