TSC warns teachers against not taking Covid- 19 jab

By Malachi Motano

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has given teachers countrywide seven days to get a COVID-19 jab or risk facing disciplinary action.

TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia said the commission is dismayed by the low uptake of the vaccine by teachers despite being accorded the priority as frontline workers.

“The Ministry of Health has assured us that there are enough vaccines. We will therefore be asking from our county directors and regional directors the number of teachers who have been vaccinated and those who haven’t,” Macharia said.

Statistics from the commission reveal that 110,432 teachers have been fully vaccinated so far, against the target of 330,671 in the TSC payroll .150, 000 others in private schools have also been vaccinated.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, 549 teachers have contracted COVID-19 with 81 fatalities recorded.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has blamed the low uptake of vaccination among teachers on the timing of the vaccination schedule.
