Kajiado County commissions a public school

Kajiado County government has commissioned the first public primary school in Kyang’ombe suburb of Kitengela town.

The commissioning of Dr. Likimani primary school and Early Childhood Development centre is expected to ease congestion in schools, a problem that has been witnessed for long due to the existence of only two public primary schools in the area; G.K Prisons and Utawala.

The school is named after Dr Jason Likimani, a man of many firsts who fits the bill of a role model. Dr. Likimani was the first Kenyan to be admitted to Makerere University to study medicine and after graduation, he was the first Kenyan doctor after the country attained independence. He was also among the founders of Amref Flying doctors.

Naming the school after him is aimed at motivating the pupils to study hard and excel in their academics.

Speaking during the commissioning of the school, Education Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Dr. Sarah Ruto, said the 520 pupils from Pre- Primary 1 to Grade 5 enrolled at the school will receive capitation grant of Ksh1, 480 each following the posting of the school’s head teacher by Teachers Service Commission.

Dr. Ruto, noted that the Competency Based Curriculum requires the involvement of the students, teachers and the parents for it to be successful.

Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku, who was present at the commissioning, pledged to increase the number of classes in the school in the next financial year so as to cater for the high demand of public primary schools.

“I will continue to support education in the county as it is the most viable tool of empowerment for our children,” he said.

During the event, the governor disbursed Ksh50 million for bursaries to assist children from needy families.
