Most secondary schools in Siaya county owe their suppliers huge amounts of money due to underfunding of schools.

The schools heads, who have been threatened with legal action by the suppliers have nw opted to stay out of their offices.

The Principals led by Thomas Obura of Majengo Mixed Secondary School in Bondo sub- County lamented that the under-funding and late disbursement of funds from the government has cost them a lot of suffering as key operations continue to hurt.

‘We are being threatened by suppliers who aren’t willing to supply goods and services because we owe them lots of money. We haven’t even paid some suppliers since 2019. We will be doomed if doomed if we don’t get funding in real time, ’Obura said.

The head teachers also expressed fear over shortage of accommodation services once form ones are admitted.

“With the Covid 19 regulations which provide for social distancing, a school like Majengo Secondary that has only two form 1 classrooms will have a big challenge because we have been allocated 346 students to admit in Form one,” he feared.

Teachers shortage is also an issue of concern given additional classes will require additional teachers.

“Many schools will be forced to make shift classes to accommodate the big numbers,” said Obura.

Other concerns expressed by Obura were  need for more science laboratories  and capitation, which he described as skewed .
