KNUT demands transparency, accountability in teachers’ recruitment

KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu has called upon the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to be fair and transparent in the exercise of recruiting teachers.

Oyuu said that the recruitment process could only be fair and transparent if priority was given to those who graduated early.

He noted because of corruption, teachers who graduated late were prioritized over those who graduated early.

‘It is unfortunate that most teachers who graduated ten years ago are still languishing at home because of unemployment,’ he added.

Speaking to Education news in Nyamira town, Oyuu decried understaffing in most schools across the country due retirement and death and therefore challenged the commission to move with speed in filling those vacancies so as to prevent Kenyan children from further agony and suffering.

“This issue of teachers’ unemployment after graduation is giving us a big headache and that is why we are asking the government to address this matter urgently” the secretary general added.

Oyuu also challenged the county governments to address issue of Early Childhood Development Education which forms the foundation of the child’s education.

He also asked the county governments to come up a budget which could see ECDE teachers employed on permanent terms and not contracts as most of them were doing.
