Education stakeholders in Kilifi County have been urged to upgrade school infrastructure to enhance effective teaching and learning.

Speaking to Education News in Malindi town, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Malindi branch Executive Secretary, Mr. Fredrick Nguma lamented that many schools in the region lack essential physical learning facilities.

“The prevailing situation has actually hampered effective learning in schools in the county,” said Nguma

He disclosed that pupils still sit on dusty floors, logs and stones while learning in some schools in rural areas.

Nguma asked stakeholders to provide the necessary learning facilities in schools to enable pupils and students learn in a conducive environment.

“Lack of adequate learning facilities discourages children not to go to school because the learning atmosphere is unfavourable for them,” said Nguma.

He added that parents are therefore duty bound to provide the essential learning facilities in schools to enable children learn under healthy environment.

He also attributed poor academic standards and dismal performance in national examinations in the county to lack of necessary learning facilities.
