Meru National Polytechnic closed after students protest alleged election rigging

The Meru National Polytechnic has been closed indefinitely after irate students went on rampage protesting over alleged election rigging.

The protesting students took to the streets in the morning blocking roads and lighting bonfires with tyres to pass across their message.

Business at the usually busy Makutano shopping centre came to a temporal stand still when the students engaged the security agencies in running battles.

Police were forced to lobe tear gas canisters at the protesting students in a bid to disperse them while traders had to swiftly close down their business premises in a bid to avoid damage to their property.

Through a memo, the institution’s Chief Principal Eng. Stephen Rukaria ordered all the students to vacate the polytechnic within a period of 30 minutes.

“This is to inform you that the institution has been closed until further notice and all trainees have 30 minutes to vacate,” read part of the memo dated July 19, 2021.

The students claimed that their preferred candidate was rigged out and the position of the student leader given to unpopular person.

They are now calling for a repeat election to enable them exercise their democratic rights.
