Retired principal urges TSC hire more teachers

The 100 percent transition from primary to secondary schools although a noble idea it may compromise academic standards in the country if not well addressed, a retired High school principal has said.

Stanley Waiswa, the immediate former principal of Sivilie Secondary School in Navakholo sub-county in Kakamega county claimed that facilities in secondary schools have been overstretched by over enrollment of learners.

Consequently, Waiswa urged the government to allocate more funds to schools for infrastructure development in order for the institutions’ management to effectively deal with the increased number of learners.

He at the same time also appealed to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to hire more secondary school teachers so as to alleviate the acute shortage the schools are facing.

The former principal argued that sub-county secondary schools in Navakholo cannot accommodate all pupils who sat the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) due to inadequate classrooms and teachers.

Waiswa said since the current crop of learners are the ones being prepared for Vision 2030 they need quality education, a factor, he added  that can only be achieved through conducive learning environment and adequate teachers.

The retired principal who is also the former national chair of Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association spoke to Education News recently.
