Students shun TTCs for TVET centers

By Tony Wafula

Private institutions in Bungoma County have remained without students as many opt for TVET centers where they can access free government education.

The government of Kenya introduced technical colleges in every constituency where youths can acquire technical knowledge; in addition the government pays a portion of their fees.

Initially, private academies used to merit national examination but this time around public schools took the lead.

Some of the giant private schools in Bungoma County remained silent as the public stormed all roads to celebrate their exemplary results.

Moreover, since the spike of Covid-19 pandemic half of private institutions’ employees lost their jobs as some schools were closed while some were turned into worship centers.

Speaking to the press at her office Dorothy Auma, the Director of Nabongo Teachers Training College and Nabongo Senior Secondary school in Kanduyi Constituency Bungoma County recounted how student enrollment has continuously gone down in many private institutions since the introduction of TVET centers.

“We’ve been doing so well since we started in 2011 but the coming of free education has shaken students’ enrollment,” she said.
