Knut demands commencement of new salary talks

By Malachi Motano

Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) is daring teacher employer (TSC) to begin new salary talks or it calls for industrial action next week.

According to the Union Secretary General Wilson Sossion, the current salary rates were negotiated to cover 2017-2021 and will end in June this year. Under the rates, teachers are earning a cumulative sum of Sh54 billion.

The Secretary General has so far written to the Teachers employer saying: “We hereby issue a 14-day notice from the date of this letter and failure of action from your part shall lead to full-blown industrial action.”

Sossion, in his letter dated February 10, argues that despite many pleas by the union to start negotiations on the 2021-2025 new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), the teachers’ employer is yet to respond.
